Amber West is a feminist poet and theater-maker originally from California. Her poems have appeared in journals such as Calyx, The Feminist Wire, and Southword, and in the anthology Women Write Resistance: Poets Resist Gender Violence. Her plays and “puppet poems” have been performed on the east and west coasts. She has published essays in Episodes from a History of Undoing: The Heritage of Female Subversiveness, The Routledge Companion to Puppetry & Material Performance, Journal of Research on Women & Gender, and Puppetry International. She earned her BA in Literature/Creative Writing at UC Santa Cruz, her MFA in Poetry at NYU and her PhD in English at UConn. For many years she’s taught poetry to underserved youth through nonprofits like America SCORES. She lives in Brooklyn, NY where she is co-founder of the volunteer artist collective, Alphabet Arts, and director of Puppets & Poets, an annual festival blending poetry, puppetry, and other arts.
